Park Wan-suh (1931-2011) was one of the most respected fiction writers of postwar South Korea. She wrote in Korean, and her work examines family life and the middle class with a sharp, critical eye, along with the lasting marks left by the Korean War.

She was born in 1931 in Gaepung, in Gyeonggi province, in an area that is now part of North Korea. She entered Seoul National University, but the war and the death of her older brother cut short her studies. During the conflict, the North Korean army separated her from her mother and another brother and took them north. She lived in Achui, in Guri, on the outskirts of Seoul, until her death. Her first work, The Naked Tree, appeared in 1970, when she was forty, and her output grew quickly after that.

Her fiction is often grouped into three strands. The first deals with the war and its aftermath, with mothers who lose their families and daughters who must hold households together. The second targets the hypocrisy and materialism of urban middle-class Koreans in a country remade by industrialization after the 1960s. From the 1980s onward, the third strand turns to the situation of women in a patriarchal society. The story The Dreaming Incubator is perhaps the clearest example: a woman is pressured into abortion until she bears a son.

Her work won many Korean prizes, including the Yi Sang Literary Prize in 1981 and the Korean Literature Prize in 1990. Her legacy lies in giving voice to women and family life in a literature that had often overlooked them, and in showing how social criticism can operate within the domestic sphere.
