Break No Bones is the ninth novel by Kathy Reichs featuring forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. The story begins when Brennan and her students are working at a site of prehistoric graves on Dewees Island, South Carolina, a barrier island. There, the decomposing body of a person is uncovered in a shallow grave off a lonely beach.

Brennan is later called upon to find out what is happening when other bodies begin to turn up all around the Charleston area. The novel also includes a romantic subplot in which Brennan must choose between two men: her sometime lover, Detective Andrew Ryan, and her estranged husband, Janis "Pete" Peterson. Alongside this, she deals with Emma Rousseau, a friend and the local coroner, who has terminal cancer.
