AuthorMaurice Maeterlinck1862–1949The Treasure of the Humble is a collection of thirteen deeply reflective mystical essays by the Belgian Nobel Laureate Maurice Maeterlinck. Published in 1896 and dedicated to Georgette Leblanc, the book gathers meditations on silence, the awakening of the soul, mystic morality, women, the tragical in daily life, invisible goodness and inner beauty. Among its essays are also pieces devoted to Ruysbroeck, Emerson and Novalis, thinkers who shaped the author's outlook.
The English translation by Alfred Sutro, issued in 1897 with an introduction by A. B. Walkley, omits the essays on Ruysbroeck, Emerson and Novalis, and so is shorter than the original French collection.
